The Siena International Photo Awards, known for its emotionally evocative photographs, has unveiled its 2023 winners. This year’s Photographer of the Year accolade goes to Salwan Georges, an Iraqi-American photographer and journalist, for his touching photo titled Georgy.
Salwan’s photo captures a poignant moment in the life of Georgy Keburia, as he parts from his family in Odesa, Ukraine. This image poignantly portrays the impact of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, which began in March 2022, forcing millions to flee their homes and country. In the photo, a mother and daughter face the heart-wrenching decision to leave Georgy, their husband and father, as they seek safety elsewhere. Meanwhile, Georgy’s own sorrow and resolve as he remains behind to defend his country are palpable. Salwan’s skillful blend of photojournalism and artistic sensitivity vividly conveys the profound emotional toll of the war.

In addition to the overall winner, the Siena International Photo Awards celebrated victors in 12 different categories encompassing single photo, photo story, and video. The winners were announced during a ceremony at Siena’s Teatro dei Rinnovati, which also marked the commencement of the Siena Awards 2023 festival. Running until November 19, 2023, this visual arts festival will animate Siena and its environs.
The festival features two group exhibitions: “Creative Photo Awards” and “Drone Photo Awards,” both showcasing a rich array of winning photos and videos from around the world. This year, the festival extends its reach to the historic center of Sovicille and debuts the “Chiusdino♥Creative” open-air exhibition in Chiusdino from July 8.
